What can I say about Hammer’s “Better Run Run” song that is intended to be a scathing diss towards Jay-Z? Well, let me preface my thoughts with these points. I am an emcee, one who happens to prescribe to the Christian faith. I may also one of the least conspiracy theory minded ones that you would ever meet. I have a level of respect for Hammer and Jay-Z for their contributions to the Hip-Hop music genre. With that out of the way, I will try my best to not disrespect either emcee.
“Better Run Run” is seemingly a response to the jabs that Jay spit on Kanye West’s “So Appalled”.
“Show me where the boats is, Ferrari Testarossas/
And Hammer went broke, so you know I’m more focused/
I lost thirty mil so I spent another thirty/
‘Cuz unlike Hammer, thirty million can’t hurt me/
Hammer didn’t find that too flattering and responded using the route of supposedly revealing a connection between the Satanism, and Jay-Z, which seems to be the “flavor of the month” in some circles. It has been a conversation that has been in the air for quite some time, thrust about with the help of numerous blogs and YouTube clips that claim to have some deep perspective on the subject matter. Symbols here, symbols there…symbols everywhere right? Hammer is aiming to further “expose” this theory.
However, in my humble opinion, this is what happened…a mixed message. Hammer comes through the gate aggressively in typical battle fashion seeking to undermine the target while defending his honor. Towards the conclusion of the song’s video, he intercepts the Devil’s pursuit of “Jay-Z”, and from what I assume, confronts Jay with an unheard, supposed Gospel of Jesus Christ message, then proceeds to baptize him in the nearby body of water. I think that conclusion would be great…bbbuuuttttttt, in practice, how would I expect a person who I just verbally berated on a personal level to immediately receive God’s love out of my mouth? THAT is the biggest issue I have with this situation. The thing about Christianity is that it is a call to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, which undoubtedly can be a tough pill to swallow especially in the area of love towards other people. Shoot, I regularly blow it and have to continually get back up and start again.
I won’t go all the way in on this song and the topics surrounding it, but let me conclude with the Twitter post I sent to the homie King Boola when he first brought this topic up.
“@kingboola There is also a segment of Christian emcees who find making diss records to be counter-productive. I happen to be one. If I continually went at the neck of someone who would be considered a "sinner"...how would I be able to fit love in?”
Much love to Hammer and Jay-Z!
