Despite an impressive effort tonight in Strongsville, North Royalton competitve eater Scott Bickel's eyes proved bigger than his stomach, as he failed in his bid to become the first person to eat the entire Applebee's "2 for $20" menu.
Bickel, a server at the restaurant, consumed an estimated 90 percent of the eight entrees and five appetizers that totals 12 pounds of food. He called it quits at the 1:06 mark, but was greeted to applause by a supportive crowd that cheered him on throughout the belly-busting challenge.
After downing his traditional post-gorge Pepto-Bismol, Bickel expressed no regrets.
"I gave it everything I had, that's all I can do," he said.
It truly was an event at the restaurant, as it was proclaimed "Scott Bickel Night", with servers and other employees donning t-shirts in support of their co-worker. An entire section was curtained off to showcase Bickel's endeavor, and some onlookers even chose to watch through a window from the chilly outdoors to get a better view.
"He's (Bickel) a great guy. We like to support our employees in whatever they do," general manager Steve Booher said.
Bickel, 20, has no plans to give up competitive eating anytime soon, and didn't rule out a second shot at the "2 for $20" menu.
"I definetely would love to one day if I have the opportunity," he said.http://www.cleveland.com/sunstarcourier/index.ssf/2010/11/bickel_falls_just_short_in_app.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
